Amritsar: Mr Gobind Singh Longowal was unanimously re-elected Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president at the general house meeting at Teja Singh Samundri Hall here on Wednesday.
Former SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur proposed the name of Mr Longowal which was endorsed by Alwinder Pal Singh Pakhoke, nephew of SAD (Taksali) chief Ranjit Singh Brahmpura.
Harjinder Singh Dhami, Rajinder Singh Mehta and Gurbaksh Singh were elected general secretary, senior vice-president and junior vice-president respectively.
However, some SGPC members, including Balwinder Singh Bains, Mahinder Singh Hussainpur, Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, Amrik Singh Shahpur and Sarwan Singh, staged a walkout, stating that it was not right to announce the name of a person as SGPC president without citing his achievements in his previous term.
Former Punjab minister and two-time legislator, Longowal was first elected as SGPC president in 2017 and also in 2018.
The SGPC general house passed a resolution condemning the Supreme Court’s recent judgment in the Ayodhya Ram Janmbhoomi (birthplace) case.
