Is there a party left for Balasaheb Thorat to lead, asks Shiv Sena

The Shiv Sena on Monday claimed that the Congress has been torn apart and nothing is left of it on ground and asked if there is a party for newly appointed Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Balasaheb Thorat to lead. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Saturday announced Balasaheb Thorat as the president of the Maharashtra unit of the party, a time when the party prepares to go in for the crucial state assembly polls.

The post of MPCC chief had fallen vacant as Ashok Chavan resigned from his post following the partys worst ever performance in the recently held Lok Sabha elections where the party won just one seat. K C Venugopal, the General secretary of the Congress also appointed Nitin Raut, Baswaraj Patil, Vishwajeet Kadam, Yashomati Thakur, Muzaffer Hussain as the working presidents of the MPCC.

Senior Congress legislator K C Padvi has been made the Congress Legislative Party leader for Maharashtra. “The Congress has not yet got a national president but it has received its state president. Balasaheb Thorat has replaced Ashok Chavan, but what is the use? The Congress has been torn and there is nothing left of it on ground. The tall leaders of the party who had for years been loyalists have now deserted it. It was once said Congress is not just a party but an ideology. However this ideology now seems to be getting merged with the BJP and Shiv Sena,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

It said the Congress does not have a political future left and therefore people left the party asking what ideology and culture is left. Citing an example, the Congress said like Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil left the Congress, 10 legislators from Goa too left the party to join the BJP. “After Rahul Gandhi’s resignation, many people jumped out of the sinking ship. Not only while ruling, the Congress did not fulfill its responsibilities even as the Opposition party,” it said.

The Congress further claimed the Congress does not stop playing caste politics even in choosing its state president and that the five working presidents were appointed keeping their castes in mind. It said Nitin Raut belongs to the Scheduled Caste, Yashomati Thakur to the Other Backward Caste, Muzaffer Hussain is a muslim, Vishwajeet Kadam a Maratha and Baswaraj Patil belongs to the Lingayat community.

The Uddhav Thackeray led party said Congress leaders Sushilkumar Shinde, Prithviraj Chavan and Nana Patole have also been assigned various responsibilities and this shows there is no young leadership left within the party. “The condition of the party in Lok Sabha elections was such that it did not even officially get the post of Leader of Opposition. In Maharashtra, Balasaheb Thorat says the party will have to be once again reconstructed and all will work together to uplift it. However, looking at the history of the party, it barely seems possible. Thorat has a good public image and knows the cooperation sector indepth. However, is the party left for him to lead it?” the Sena sought to know.
